Letter by the Admor of Kalev, R. Menahem Mendel Taub of Kiryat Kalev, Rishon-Ie-Zion (b. 1918). Born in Marghita, Romania, the son of R. Yehudah Yehiel of Rozdol. Two weeks before the outbreak of World War II, he married Hannah Sarah Shifra, the daughter of R. Pinhas Shapira, the rabbi of Kochnia. During the war, he was imprisoned in several concentration camps, including Belsen where the Nazis tortured him. He was liberated on the last day of the war. His wife had been sent to different concentration camps, but the two were eventually reunited. His father-in-law, however, perished on 3 Sivan 1944.
The intervention of his brother-in-law enabled him to emigrate to the United States. He settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where he set up a yeshiva. He later moved to New York. After seventeen years in the United States, he emigrated to Israel, where he established Kiryat Kalev in Rishon-1e-Zion. He launched a number of educational activities and was zealous in organizing the scheme of Bar B'rav d'had Yoma (one-day-scholar scheme) to provide every area with facilities for adult Torah education. He has a center Mishkan Kalev in Tiberias (near Kiryat Shmuel), a yeshiva Or Kalev in Bene Berak, a kollel in Rishon-Ie-Zion and in Jerusalem, and a Bet HaMidrash in Bene Berak. His success lies in his individual approach and his creativity. |
