Description
Only edition of this collection of essays previously published in Hebrew journals by R. Jacob Samuel ben Isaiah ha-Levi Trachtman (b. 1831). The journals in which these essay appeared are ha-Maggid, ha-Maeliz, ha-Carmel, ha-Zifera, and al-Hadas. There are forty three items, including some letters. Among the topics are life and death; the path of wealth; saying Shema; a cluster of grapes, introspection in prayer; two sages in the language of the Mishnah; two letters to explain a saying of the sages, and zot Hanukkah. There is a dedication page to his parents and then the text in a single column in square letters. Many of the essays are signed Jacob Ish Tam (“Jacob was a quiet man” (Genesis 25:27). The back wrapper is in Cyrillic. R. Trachtman was also the author of a second book of essays, Or Torah (Warsaw, 1881).
