Detailed
Description
Only edition of this unusual and kabbalistic commentary on Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah by R. Zev Wolf ben Aaron Joshua Turbowicz. Ziv Mishneh is a thorough commentary intended to explain and resolve all difficulties in the Mishneh Torah, particularly the issues raised by R. Abraham ben David (Ravid) and other commentators. R. Turbowicz’s intent is not simply to resolve issues but to completely clarify questions from their Talmudic sources and through a thorough analysis of Rambam’s language. Most significantly, as stated on the title page, it is also the author’s intent to do something novel, that is, in many he has seen fit to provide allusions to the true wisdom, the early and later kabbalists, as he explains in greater length in the first four chapters. There is an introduction from R. Turbowicz and then the text, beginning with Sefer Madah, including Hilkhot Yesod ha-Torah, Hilkhot Da’ot, Hilkhot Talmud Torah, and Hilhot Akum. These are followed by Hilkhot Shabbat, Eruvin, Yom Tov, and other subjects. Although the title page describes this volume as part one it appears that no other part was ever published.

R. Zev Wolf ben Aaron Joshua Turbowicz (1840-1921) served as rabbi, from 1866, Soslovitch in the vicinity of Minsk, and in 1876, was appointed av bet din in Klotsk, in 1879 in Volpa in the vicinity of Grodno, and in 1885 was called to Kraz. He was the author, in addition to Ziv Mishneh of Rosh Pinah on melihah; Shir Yididah on Eishet Hial; Ateret Ziv on Bereshit; Tiferet Ziv, responsa; Sha’arei Tohor on Niddah; and works extant in manuscript.
