Moving appeal by the bookseller(?), R. Avigdor Weinberger concerning the sale of the book, Sefer Ha-Panim by R. Zev Wolf b. Menahem Alter Leichter (Lvov 1911). He begins that the Lord has merited Israel and sent them this new holy book will certainly be of great benefit on the day of judgment for all who read it. It has approbations from leading rabbis. He sends it so that the recipient will have a good year, even though they have not requested it. Its price is one keter, but one who is able to send more will certainly be blessed from heaven for the book is given to one in great poverty for free for his merit and it is a mitzvah to give books to be learned from. R. Weinberger is in dire straits and in debt and beseeches the recipients to buy this book. However, one who does not wish to purchase the book and send money should promptly return it so that he might send it to someone else. The purchaser will acquire three mitzvot, first, of strengthening the hand of the poor, all of which he elaborates on in detail. He agrees that someone who does not wish to purchase the book may learn it for a week before returning it, as long as he does so in good condition so that it may be sent to someone else.
Nowhere is the relationship between R. Weinberger and the Author, R. Leichter given. The booklet containing 38 ff. deals with the prohibition on talking in the synagogue during prayer services. Towards the end R. Weinberger notes that Sefer Ha-Panim was shown to the zaddik of Spinka who favored it greatly and recommended that he buy and distribute it. |
