Detailed
Description
Rare and only edition of this commentary on Midrash Tanhuma by R. Israel Moses Bromberg. The title page is preceded by a poignant and moving bi-lingual English and Yiddish forward inserted into the book written by R. S. Bromberg, rabbi of the Congregation of Jacob Synagogue in London. In this forward R. Bromberg, who relationshipe is not specified, writes that the publisher, R. Jacob Aaron Bromberg, son of the author, R. Israel Moses Bromberg, died in Poland during the first year of World War I, about the time the book was printed. This R. Bromberg left three daughters who, victims of the war, left their homes for foreign countries, and, despite great efforts to locate them, were only found recently. He writes that their position “is undescribable.” He has gone to great effort and expenditure, going to Poland, to find these books and sell them to relieve their unhappy position. These books are for the greater part their property and the entire proceeds will be given to them. The verso of the title page has a number of approbations, followed by two introductions from the author and the text. The volume consists of Midrash Tanhuma at the top of the page in square letters, below it in Ez Yosef in the inner column and in the outer column R. Bromberg’s Nativ Hayyim and below both Anaf Yosef, all in rabbinic letters. This volume covers Bereshit only ands from the forward it is clear that it is all that was printed. No entry for this commentary on Midrash Tanhuma was found in standard bibliographic sources.
