Detailed
Description
Contains poems that Rabinowitz wrote in Europe and America during a period of ten years. Isaac b. Mordecai Rabinowitz was born in 1846 in Kovno. In his youth he composed poetry and was a student of Abraham Mapu. He later studied with rabbis in neighboring towns. After his marriage in 1867 he moved to Telz, where he engaged in business and associated with Judah Leib Gordon. He moved to Ukmerge in 1889 and he immigrated to New York in 1891. Rabinowitz had contributed to Hebrew periodicals in Europe and he translated novels into Yiddish in America. According to some estimations, he was one "of the leading writers" of poetry in his time. Specifically, he was "indisputably the foremost Neo-Hebraic poet of America ... [and] his best work was done in America" (Drachman, 71; Waxman, 4:1050). Another view, however, maintains that "those [poems] written after his arrival in the United States fall below the standard of his former productions" (IE; also see Kabakoff [1966], 287n39). Despite the assistance given to him by Israel Fine, Rabinowitz lived in poverty in America and he could not even collect enough money to publish his last work.
