Detailed
Description
Rare and apparently little known commentary on Pirkei Avot by R. David Salzer ha-Kohen (d. 1908). The title page describes it as wondrous discourses “‘sweeter than honey’ (cf. Judges 14:18) well refined, originating from a faithful source . . .” It describes R. Salzer as “among the biggest man among the Anakim (giants)” (Joshua 15:15) “a bright light in the clouds” (cf. Job 37:21). The rav, gaon, the righteous, sharp, and expert, both in Torah and Hassidut of Mukacevo. There is an approbation from R. Aaron Weiss, R. David Shlissel, R. Meir Zev Salzer Katz, and R. Menahem Weiss and a second from R. Jacob Shraga Siegel. R. Salzer’s introduction follows, and then the text, which is comprised of Pitkei Avot at the top of the page in square unvocalized letters, immediately below it Divrei David from R. Salzer, and below that Ma’amar Mordecai from R. Mordecai Salzer ha-Kohen, apparently R. Salzer’s son, who brought the work to press.

R. David Salzer was born in Sardahalle and was descended from R. David Deutsch (Ohel David). He served as dayyan and rosh av bet din in Mukacevo for thirty years. He was also the author of Divrei David on the Torah, that work being recorded by Cohen but not this commentary.
