Detailed
Description
Rare holocaust remembrance book published at the DP (displace persons) camp at Ebelsberg after World War II. The title page has a pillared arch with the verse “For these things I weep; my eye, my eye runs down with water” (Lamentations 1:16) at the arch at the top. Above the pillars is the verse “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord” (Proverbs 20:27). At the bottom of the page is “Our father our King ‘Revenge of the blood of your servants which is shed before our eyes’ (cf. Psalms 79:10).” The text of the title page is in two columns, in Hebrew and Yiddish and refers to the fact that the victims died al Kiddush HaShem. Within Le-Zikkaron Olam the book is comprised of two parts. The first part, never filled in, all the pages are blank, is for entering the names of those who perished in the holocaust. The remainder are the Yizkor prayers, appropriate Mishnayot, and Kaddish, concluding with both a translation of Kaddish into English and a transliteration of the Hebrew words. This holocaust book is unrecorded and apparently unknown, not being referenced in any known source. Its stark silence is grim testimony of the events it was meant to record.
