Detailed
Description
   R. Isidore Koplowitz was born ca. 1868. He served as the rabbi of Keneseth Israel of Richmond in 1894 and Keneseth Israel (Orthodox) of Kansas City, MO, in 1908. He died in Detroit in 1923. "In compiling data pertaining to the prohibition of wine drinking, the compiler had but one object in view, namely to present to the public a Jewish viewpoint on this vital and epoch-making question ... This book presents the thoughts and sentiments of the Talmudic Rabbins who were strongly opposed to the drinking of any wine whatever ... The subject of this volume is ... strictly limited to wine. Yet, one will find in its context protests against the drinking of any and all intoxicating drinks ... Have we no vision, no counsel, no hope, no comfort, no encouragement and no salvation to offer this, our American land and country, wherein, after centuries of weary and storm-tossed pilgrimage, we have at last found a haven, a refuge and a God-blessed homeland? Is it not doubly our duty, just because we are Jews, to uphold and support the Laws of America, especially in the case of prohibition, the law of which is sane, just, wise, moral and sacred? '" An earnest and intelligent investigation in the tomes of Israel's vast and sacred literature will convince the reader beyond a doubt that the Hebrew prophets and a host of the Talmudic Rabbins, were outspoken in the great cause of prohibition" (pp. 5-7). The text is in English with copious Hebrew sources interspersed throughout.
