Detailed
Description
Only edition of these responsa and novellae on the Rambam by R. Uri Shraga Phoebus Halfan (1640-1707). The title page describes She’elot u-Teshuvot Da’at Esh as being the first part of the work and also on the Rambam on Kilayim, written by the author who is from the house of Halfan, whose light shown and was rosh bet din and a great darshan in the city of Prague and afterwards av bet din and rosh mesivta in Bomslau in Moravia. The א"ש part of the title stands for the initials of the author’s name, Uri Shraga. There are approbations from R. Mordcai of Lissa and R. Naphtali Hertz, both in Berlin, R. Meir ben Isaac Eisenstadt, and R. Isaac ben David Gaii. Next are two introductions, one R. Halfan, the other from R. Halfan’s son. The text, in two columns in rabbinic type, is comprised of eighteen responsa. The next part of the book, with separate foliation, is an elucidation of the Rambam on hilkhot Kilayim. There are several attractive tail-pieces and initial words of parts of the book are set in ornamental borders.

The Halfan family lived in Vienna. It later changed its name to Wechsler. Among the members of the family are R. Eliezer ben Uri Shraga Phoebus (d. 1670), who was head of the community and was apparently the last person to be buried before the 1670 expulsion. His son, R. Uri Shraga Phoebus (c. 1640–1707), author of this work, headed a yeshiva in Prague and served as Rabbi of Ungarisch-Brod, Moravia
