Description

The Pentateuch and Former Prophets of the Bible with root words in hollow letters by Elias Hutter. He was born in 1553 in Goerlitz and studied Eastern languages at Jena. In 1577 he became a professor of the Hebrew language in Leipzig. His great plan to publish a new Hebrew edition of the Bible was not financially successful. Individual books appeared but the demand was too small to cover his costs. In 1597, he opened his own publishing enterprise in Nuremberg. Here he published his famous polyglot editions of the Bible. Again his publication costs were too large and because of his debts he was forced to leave. Nothing more is known of his life but he was dead by 1609. Hutter's concern was neither for correctness of text nor beauty of typography, though he succeeded in both.

אותיות השורש נדפסו באותיות רגילות, והאותיות שאינן שורשיות נדפסו באותיות חלולות. אותיות השורש שאינן מופיעות במילה נדפסו באותיות זעירות מעל לאותה מילה.
הפרקים וכל פסוק חמישי סומנו באותיות. בראש הספר הקדמת העורך בלטינית, הכוללת טבלה של הדקדוק העברי עם הסברים בלטינית, פסוק מספר תהלים פרק קיז בשלושים שפות, ועוד. נדפס ונכרך עמו:
Cubus alphabeticus sanctae ebraeae linguae... Hamburgi 1588. ראינו טפסים עם שינויים טיפוגראפיים קלים.
