The title page is followed by the approbations, signed by thirteen rabbis, and then Jehiel ben Judah Leib’s introduction. He writes that Krochmal has preached for many years, his words “sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb” (Psalms 19:11). Jehiel provides personal information, informing that his grandfather died at a young age, leaving only his mother who bore ten children who did not survive, and that he had a younger brother, “a first class adversary בכור שטן (Yevamot 16a) of great acuity, named after his grandfather, who also died at an early age in a plague. In place of his father, also deceased, he determined to publish this book. It was necessary to select “the edible from within the” (Shabbat 74a) edible אוכל מתוך אוכל and that in order to bring the book to press he had at times he had to condense and at times to expand on the text, for the writing was old, not always clear, blackened as with smoke, and the paper was blurred in places and with erasures. He has noted his modifications with (). The text follows in two columns in rabbinic type. Rishon Mekor Hayyyim encompasses the five Megillot and the Prophets, excepting Joel, Nahum, Zephaniah, and Haggai. There is a liberal use of florets, all initial words of books being set in a frame with the same florets as appear on the title page, excepting a small use of acorns, and Habakkuk, which has no such border. Rows of florets also appear after the introduction and at the end about the editor’s apologia and at the bottom of the page.
