Detailed
Description
First edition of this kabbalistic commentary on the Torah by R. Samuel ben Moses (17-18th centuries) of Swislotz, Russia. The engraved title page has the detailed architectural comprised of pillars with, at the top, two cherubim blowing horns, at the bottom an eagle with spread wings. Within the wings is a carriage and figures, and in the middle of this scenario is a depiction of the Patriarch Jacob meeting Joseph in Egypt, recalling “And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while” (Genesis 46:29). The title page states that it “brings to light that which is concealed, and explanations and reasons of the Torah by the great and sharp Rav, expert in revealed and esoteric Torah, “the craftsmen and smith” (II Kings 24:14, 16, Jeremiah 29:2), the kabbalist, the godly, the renowned av bet din and rosh mesivta, R. Samuel son of the aged R. Moses, av bet din Swislotz, Lita.” The title page is dated in a straightforward manner תנט (459 = 1699). The colophon, however, dates completion of the work with the verse “And Israel saw the great work which the Lord did ’וירא ישראל את היד הגדולה אשר עשה ה (1699) [upon the Egyptians]” (Exodus 15:31). Next are approbations from R. Mordecai Siskind, R. Saul ben Abraham Joshua Heschel, R. David Oppenheim, R. Abraham Broda, R. Uri Shraga Feibush Halpin, R. Menahem Mendel Ashkenazi, R. Isaac Aaron Wermisa, and R. Samuel Eli Issachar Berman. R. Samuel ben Moses’ introduction (2b-3a) follows. In it R. Samuel refers to his work on Psalms, Yad Shemu’el, and to part two, Shem Shemu’el, together “a memorial and a name” (Isaiah 56:4) within the community and people. This is not the complete work but a portion only. Moreover, although it is arranged according to the weekly Torah readings, it is built, almost in its entirety, upon R. Samuel’s commentary on Psalms. Furthermore, Samuel writes that the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in the voice of his father, the elderly godly kabbalist R. Moses. Moses’ words, sweet and pleasant, are included throughout Shem Shemu’el, for “And this is the Torah which Moses set וזאת התורה אשר שם משה” (Deuteronomy 4:44) which alludes in its initial letters to Samuel Moses שמואל משה. After the introduction is a separate paragraph expressing gratitude to R. David Oppenheim, his uncle, R. Samuel Oppenheim and his family for their assistance in the publication of this volume. The text follows in two columns in rabbinic type.
