Detailed
Description
Only edition of these novellae on tractates Berakhot, Pe'ah and Demai by R, Samuel ben Issachar Bear Freund. The verso of the title page has the censor’s imprimatur, that is, from Carolus Fischer. Next are approbations from R. Elazur Flekes, R. Samuel Segal Landau, R. Benjamin Wolff Boskivitz, R. Meir ben Simhah Weil, R. Zavel Eger, R. Akiva Israel ben Avigdor Brasel, R. Zalman ben Abraham Tarir Katz, and R. Moses Tuvia of Zontheim. There is an introduction from R. Freund; he has entitled the book Zera Kodesh because the name seems appropriate, as it addresses such subjects as the laws of separating terumah and ma’aserot, Hallah and becurim, all holy to the Lord (kodesh le-HaSham). The text follows in two columns in rabbinic type. The volume concludes with errata. Although the title page describes this volume as part one no further volumes were ever published. R. Samuel ben Issachar Bear Freund (1794–1881) was a rabbi and the author of commentaries and glosses on the Mishnah and halakhic works. Born in Touskov, Bohemia, R. Freund was a pupil of R. Baruch Fraenkel-Teomim of Leipnik and R. Bezalel Ranschburg (Rosenbaum) of Prague. He served as rabbi in Lobositz, and afterward in Prague (1834–79), where he succeeded R. Samuel ben Ezekiel Landau as dayyan, or "Oberjurist." R. Freund initiated the founding of the "Afike Jehuda" society for Jewish science in Prague (1869). He died in Prague. In addition to Zera Kodesh R. Freund wrote Musar Av (Vienna, 1839), a commentary on Proverbs; Teshuvat Keren Shemu’el (Prague, 1841), a responsum on the subject of eating legumes, rice, and millet during Passover, his conclusion being that they cannot be permitted; Et le-Hannenah (1850), glosses on the order Mo'ed; Ir ha-Zedek (1863), an abridgment of the Sefer Mitzvot Gadol (Semag) of Moses of Coucy, with glosses, novellae, and expositions; and Amarot Tehorot (1867), glosses to, and corrections of the works of commentators on the order Tohorot, together with his own Ketem Paz (1870), a commentary on Avot, and an appendix of glosses and novellae to Berakhot.
