Detailed
Description
Rare and unusual slightly non-traditional Haggadah issued by and for the Haganah. The Haganah was the underground military organization of the yishuv in Erez Israel from 1920 to 1948. The Entitled Le-Hag ha-Herut (the festival of freedom) Haggadah the cover has a sword piercing through a red wreath, symbolic of the Haganah. The title page has a shield with the luhot (two tablets) at the top and a lave below with the words ha0medinat ha-Evrit between them. All about are flags with stars. At the top is the line today we go out in the month of Aviv, raising the the first cup of our lives. The verso begins the Hagaddah with the traditional text of the Haggadah with depictions, on the right, of a poor enslaved man and on the left of a Jewish pioneer. The text printed in large attractive rust colored letters deviates very little from the traditional text, although at the end is an added reference to Moses as a shepherd and at the end a reference to Bialik. One makes this Haggadah particularly noteworthy is the accompanying illustrations. For example, by He she-amdah is a drawing of four armed men and one woman. Several initial letters are historiated, within initial mems are figurines. The large sketch by the third cup is of a ship with a star of David on it sail approaching a settlement with one building having a menorah on its front. The next page has depictions of five biblical personalities at the top and below, at the sides of armed soldiers, one with the subtitle gebor ha-ghetto. The back cover has a list of shiri Pesah. This Haggadah does not appear in Yudlov’s Ozer Ha-Haggadot.
