Detailed
Description
Nathan Nota Salant was born in 1889 in Jerusalem. His wife remained there when he immigrated to America in 1914. Upon arrival he declared his occupation as bookkeeper and his destination as the Lower East Side, where his uncle lived at 92 Canal St. (EID); he was still living at that address as late as 5680 [1920] (p. [1]). Salant was involved in selling etrogim (citrons) from the Land of Israel. His grandfather was R. Samuel Salant, the chief rabbi of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem.

"As a grand-son of Rabbi Salant, I regard it as my holy duty to erect an unforgettable monument to the memory of my grandfather, and for this purpose I have collected many incidents and events that took place during his life time, and which furnish one with some idea about the personality of this famous man, and by publishing this collection, we will attain a double object: It will serve ... as a monument to his name, and it will also be of great service to the reading public, who want to get a first-hand knowledge of the Jewish Community in Jerusalem, its institutions, spiritual and intellectual guides". Salant planned to use the profits from the sale of this work to establish a yeshiva in Jerusalem, which he would head (p. 2).
