Maimonides's "Hilkhot De'ot (from Mishneh Torah-Sefer ha-Mada) with commentary. R. Shabbatei b. Jacob Hayyim Sofer (1861-) rabbi and preacher. He was born in Karlin Byelorussia Prevented by poor health from traveling to a yeshiva, he was educated by his father. He began preaching in local synagogues by the age of fourteen and his oratory was well known by the time he was twenty. R. Sofer moved to Jerusalem in 5642 [1882]. He visited America five years later as a rabbinic emissary to collect funds for the Ezrat Nidahim society. He was implored upon to remain in New York as the preacher for Anshei Kalvarier (B'nai Israel/Sons of Israel). He served that congregation for nine years before becoming the rabbi and preacher of Congo Machzikei Torah Anshei Senier. He remained there until at least 1903.
