Detailed Description |

Report about the topography of El-ghor or “Jordans-au” in Palestine explored during an expedition by the German scholars Hermann Zschokke and Albert von Hoermann. The most important result of the journey was the discovery of the biblical site Gilgal. It is about 2 miles cast of the site of Byzantine Jericho, and 1 mile from modern er-Riha. A fine tamarisk, traces of a church (which is mentioned in the 8th century), and a large reservoir, now filled up with mud, remain. The place is called Jiljulieh, and its position north of the valley of Achor (Wad! Kelt) and east of Jericho agrees well with the biblical descriptions. A tradition connected with the fall of Jericho is attached to the site. This sanctuary and camp of Israel held a high place in the national regard, and is mentioned several times in Judges and Samuel. But whether this is the Gilgal spoken of by Amos and Hosca in connexion with Bethel is disputed and by no means certain. The report is illustrated with a) a sketch of the tomb of Josua from the outside b) the tomb of Josua in cross-section c) the surroundings of the tomb of Josua.
Hermann Zschokke (1838-1920), was a Catholic Bible scholar and historian who grew up and studied in Vienna. Between 1864 and 1866 he became the headmaster of the Austrian-Hungarian House for Pilgrims in Jerusalem, where he continued his studies of biblical languages and went on the described expedition. Upon his return to Vienna he became a professor for Old Testament Bible studies at the University of Vienna, in 1910 he was ordained as a bishop.
