Description		    First edition. 114 ff., 316:195 mm., wide margins, old hands on title, light age and damp staining, initial 5 and final 2 ff. repaired affecting several words. A good copy bound in contemporary half vellum and marbled paper boards.

Description		    In the introduction the Author's writes that his brother perished in an outbreak of the plague, he had caught the disease as well and was sick on his deathbed when his father entered the room and started praying in the corner that the disease be transferred to him so that the son may live. Miraculously, the father became ill and died and the son survived. On his deathbed he promised the father to print these responsa - which he is fulfilling, however volume two was apparently never printed.

Important responsa by R. Ephraim b. Jacob ha-Kohen (1616–1678), rabbinic authority. R. Ephraim served as a judge in Vilna together with R. Shabbetai Kohen and R. Aaron Samuel Koidanover in the bet din of his teacher, R. Moses Ben Isaac Judah Lima. During the Swedish War (1655), R. Ephraim fled from Vilna to Velke Mezerici in Moravia. From there he went to Prague, where he established a yeshivah. He then moved to Vienna, remaining there until 1666, when he was appointed head of the bet din in Ofen (Buda). There he established a famous yeshiva and corresponded with some of the most prominent rabbis of his time, including those of Turkey and Erez Israel, among them R. Moses Galante and R. Moses ibn Habib. Toward the end of his life he was invited to the rabbinate of the Ashkenazi congregation of Jerusalem, a position which, 80 years earlier, his grandfather R. Ephraim ha-Kohen, had held. He died, however, before he could take up the position. R. Ephraim was one of the great legal authorities of his generation. His decisions on many questions, civil, domestic and religious, helped influence Jewish life in several countries for a number of generations. His only published work is his responsa, Sha'ar Efrayim on the Shulhan Arukh, published by his son R. Aryeh Loeb (Sulzbach, 1689). Other works have remained in manuscript. Ephraim was the grandfather of R. Zevi Hirsch Ashkenazi, the "Hakham Zevi."
