Responsa on all four parts of the Shulhan Arukh by R. Abraham Zevi ben Eleazar, noted rabbi and posek in Poland. The title page states that it is one part of Efod Zahav, the general title R. Abraham gave ihs works. The verso of the title page has an approbation from R. Isaac Shelkes and an introduction from R. Abraham Zevi’s father followed by the author’s introduction. Berit Avraham is in two parts, the first on Orah Hayyim and Yoreh De’ah, the second on the remaining parts of the Shulhan Arukh with its own title page and foliation. Each part concludes with an index of the responsa.
R. Abraham Zevi ben Eleazar (1780–1828) lived, in his youth, in Piotrkow near Lodz, where he studied under his grandfather, R. Solomon ben Jehiel Michel, and R. Moses, the av bet din. In 1800 he served as rabbi of Pilica, and later, before 1819, as av bet din of Piotrkow. In formulating his rulings R. Abraham Zevi utilized the pilpul method employed in the Urim ve-Tummim of R. Jonathan Eybeschuetz, the Noda bi-Yhudah of R. Ezekiel Landau, and the Hafla'ah of R. Phinehas Horowitz. He gave his rabbinical works the general title Efod Zahav, but designated each by a special name. The only two that have been published are Berit Avraham and Gufei Halakhot (pt. 1, Lodz, 1911), novellae to the tractates Shabbat, Pesahim, and Ketubbot. Remaining in manuscript form are Ma'alot Yuhasin, novellae to the Even ha-Ezer; Halva'at Hen, novellae on the halakhot concerning usury; pt. 2 of his Gufei Halakhot containing novellae on the rulings of the great posekim; and Pa'amonei Zahav, his sermons. |
