| Cantorial recitatives for the High Holy days that were compiled by the pupils and colleagues of Cantor Eliyohu Shnipelsky (1879-1947) as a fitting memorial. "It contains a complete selection of recitatives for the High Holy Days including Slichos, rosh Hashono and Yon Kippur." Rev. Simon Raisin made the selections of the compositions. The titles are in Hebrew and the lyrics are transliterated. There is also a "Word from the Editor" by Henry Lefkowitch (b. 1891).
Eliyohu (Elias) Shnipelisky was born in Vilna and sang in choirs as a child. He was inspired by Cantor Rozumni. He graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Odessa and soon became a choir leader in Grodno and other cities of Europe for the most renowned cantors of that day.
In 1908 he came to New York where he became Cantor Rosenblatt's first Choir Leader. In later years, he was Choir Leader and composer for Cantors Rutman and Hershman. He also conducted a choir for Cantor Chagy in Newark for many years.
His first book, Shirei Zimro (Friday evening service for Cantor, Solo and Choir) was published in 1910. In 1924 Tfilas Eliyohu (recitatives for the Cantor for the Sabbath) was published.
Eliyohu Shnipelisky also conducted classes for cantors and many of his pupils became famous Chazonim. Jan Peerce, in his youth, was a member of his choir. |
