Detailed
Description
Bi-lingual Hebrew-Polish prayer book edited by R. S. Spitzer. The title page, entirely in Polish excepting the Hebrew header Sha’arei Shamayim, describes this liturgical work as Modly Izraelitow. It is followed by a half title page with the Hebrew Seder Tefillah and the Polish Modlitewnik. The text is set with the Hebrew and Polish text on facing pages. The liturgy begins, under the heading prayers for children, with modeh and netillat yadi’am. Prayers, which are complete and comprehensive, are according to the Ashkenaz rite. In addition to daily prayers this siddur includes prayers for Shabbat, Pirkei Avot, Hallel, Mussaf for Rosh Hodesh and for the Shelosh Regalim, Rosh HaShanah, prayers for Yom Kippur, concluding with Birkhat ha-Mazon. The volume, albeit with Polish, is comparable to siddurim printed today with Hebrew and accompanying English. It is of particular interest because it was published for what was then the world’s largest Jewish community, one that is no longer extant, and is, therefore, a work unlikely to be reproduced any time in the foreseeable future.
