Testament of R. Pinehas Menahem Eleazar ben Benjamin Eliezer Justman of Pilica (1849-1921). The title page is dated with the author’s name. The verso of the title page states that it was brought to press by his son and son-in-law. In his testament R. Justman requests forgiveness from those who came to see him regularly and brought him gifts.
R. Justman was married to the daughter of Abraham Mordecai Alter. When his first wife died he remarried to the daughter of R. Hehemiah Rothenberg. R. Justman was a hasid of R. Heinokh of Alexander and of R. Judah Leib of Ger. He settled, in 1905, in Pilicia, and afterwards in Virshov and then Czestochowa. R. Justman was the author of Sifsei Zadikkim (Warsaw, 1936-39), a five volume work on the weekly Torah portions. R. Justman emphasized that Shabbat should be devoted to Torah study and that a person should study at least one page of Talmud daily, utilizing the commentaries of Rashi and the Rosh, thus completing the entire Talmud in seven years. It was his practice to arise at 6 A. M., receive Hasidim for ninety minutes, and then spend the day in study. R. Justman was succeeded by his son Hanokh Gad. |
