Detailed
Description
Only edition of this important ethical work by the early Sephardic sage R. Abraham bar Hiyya. Hegyon ha-Nefesh remained in manuscript for centuries until edited and published by Isaac Freimann. It has a lengthy introduction from Solomon Judah Leib Rapoport (Rappaport, Shir, 1790–1867), rabbi and scholar, pioneer of Haskalah and Wissenschaft des Judentums. Chronologically and intellectually R. Abraham bar Hiyya followed R. Bahya. R. Abraham bar Hiyya, iIn his homily in four chapters on repentance, divides the laws of Moses, to correspond with the three classes of pious men, into three groups, namely: (1) the Decalogue, the first commandment of which is merely an introduction accentuating the divine origin and the eternal goal of the Law; (2) the group of laws contained in the second, third, and fourth books of Moses, intended for the people during their wandering in the desert or during the Exile, to render them a holy congregation; (3) the Deuteronomic legislation, intended for the people living in an agricultural state and forming a "kingdom of justice." All these laws are only necessary while sensuality prevails; but in the time of the Messianic redemption, when the evil spirit shall have vanished, no other laws than those given in the Decalogue will be necessary. The note of asceticism is still more accentuated in the "Hegyon ha-Nefesh" than in "Hovot ha-Levavot," and R. Abraham barHḤiyya went so far as to praise celibacy, which is in direct opposition to the law of Moses. According to R. Hiyya, the non-Jew may attain as high a degree of godliness as the Jew ("Hegyon ha-Nefesh," 8a).
