An invitation to a gathering at the "New Burial Ground" of the Sefardi Jews, where Rev. David Bueno de Mesquita is to deliver an address on "The Historical Associations of the Beth Ahaim Novo" to be followed, if weather permits, by a tour of the ground.
The invitation is printed, with the invitee's name "Dr. Cecil Roth" written in ink. The cover of the invitation has photographs taken by H.A. Ruddick. The second "page" has pictures of two tablets from the North Wall , one dated 1733 and the other dated 1953.
Sir Francis A. Montefiore, Bart., will preside.
The back page has a map of London from H. Chamberlain;s History of London, 1770, which shows Jew. New Bur. Gr.
Opened in 1725, the site contains the grave of Haim Benjamin Artom among the 2,000 graves remaining. Some 7,500 were transferred to Brentwood, Essex, during the 1970's. Sir Francis A. Montefiore was an English communal worker and Zionist; son of Joseph M. Montefiore, president of the Board of Deputies; born Oct. 10, 1860. In 1886 he took up the baronetcy previously held by Sir Moses Montefiore. He became high sheriff of the county of Kent in 1894, and of Sussex in 1895. He was chairman of the executive committee of the English Zionist Federation and represented the English section at Zionist congresses. Montefiore was elected chairman of Elders of the Spanish and Portuguese congregation. |
