Description		    [1], 243; 92; 144 ff., light age and use staining, wide margins, thick paper, printed end papers, gilt edges. A very good copy bound in contemporary speckled calf, rubbed, embossed מאדטמע מארקס אין מינכען on front panel in gilt. Initial fly leaf contains a handwritten birth record from 1799-1813 of eight children.

Description		    A ladies year round prayer book with many specialized liturgies to be recited at special occasions following the Ashkenazi Rite. Includes Pirke Avot and Psalms with a Yiddish translation. Such prayerbooks were generally given as a wedding gift by the groom to his new wife, who used it till death for every religious occasion leaving their classic usage mark - a Yiddishe Mama's tears. The prayerbook also contains a wide variety of Tehinnot, a form of piyyutin which originated in the tahanun prayer for the fasts of Monday and Thursday. The term was also transferred to piyyutim for the selihot days, and indeed both the construction and subject of the tehinnah are similar to selihot. The tehinnah is usually said quietly, its subject being the relationship between God and the people of Israel. It is sometimes constructed in rhymed verses, sometimes in rhymed rhetoric, or even unrhymed, in the style of a bakkashah. In addition to Hebrew tehinnot, there were Yiddish-German ones for women published in small brochures from the beginning of the 18th century in Bohemia (Prague), Switzerland (Basle), Germany (Sulzbach, Fuerth, Roedelheim), and many towns of Russia and Poland. Occasionally tehinnot were added as appendixes to editions of the prayer book.
