Detailed
Description
Bi-lingual Hebrew-Latin edition of Rashi’s commentary on the book of Esther with scholia by Ludovico Henrico Aquino (17th century). Aquino, an apostate who converted to Christianity in Naples, was the son of the French-Hebraist Philippe d’Aquin, an apostate whose works include translations of Behinat Olam and Ma’arikh ha-Ma’arakhot (Paris, 1629, see below). This Aquino was a writer and translator, with many Hebrew works to his credit, among them this rare edition of Rashi and commentaries on Esther. The title page is in Latin, excepting a Hebrew header that states it is Esther with the commentary of Rashi and the Talmud and Yalkut Shimoni. The comparable Latin text states that it is Scholia Rabi Salomonis Iarchi (R. Solomon ben Isaac, Rashi) in Librvm Esther. Item & excerpta quaedam ex Talmudo Ialcut in eundem librvm, excerpts from the Talmud and the Yalkut and interpretations by Aquino. Next is a dedication to the canon D. Petro Peyrissac, Aquino’s introduction and the text, all with head-pieces and historiated initial letters. The text is comprised of Rashi’s commentary in the outer column and the interpretative Latin translation in the inner column. The second half of the book, beginning on page 18, is the scholia, entirely in Latin, comprised of excerpts from the Talmud and Yalkut. Aquino’s other works include a translation of the first four chapters of R. Levi ben Gerson’s (Ralbag) commentary on the Book of Job (Paris, 1623).

Ludovico Henrico Aquino (Louis-Henri d’Aquin) was a writer and translator of the seventeenth century; son of Philippe D'Aquin. He was converted to Christianity at Aquino in the kingdom of Naples. He left many works relating to the Hebrew language and literature, among which is this translation into Latin of the commentary on the Book of Esther by R. Solomon b. Isaac, with extracts relating thereto from the Talmud and Yalkut (Paris, 1622), and a Latin translation of the first four chapters of Levi ben Gerson's commentary on the Book of Job (Paris, 1623).
