Detailed
Description
Overview of the principles of Judaism for Jewish youth by J. H. Polenaar and M. Polak and translated from the Dutch by M. J. Rudelsheim, Master of the Wolverhampton Hebrew Congregational School. In the author’s preface the monograph is described as the first part of a catechism for the young for their edification and the propagation of a truly religious spirit among the Jewish youth. In the translator’s note Rudelsheim writes that it is his hope to supply his juvenile co-religionists with something that will help to make the belief of our Holy Religion take deep roots in their minds. The text is primarily in English but with a fair amount of Hebrew. The first chapter is on God and his many attributes, in which the thirteen tenets of faith are taught in a question and answer format supported by verses. The second chapter is on prophecy and the giving of the law. The third and final chapter is on Reward and Punishment. These chapters are also in the question and answer format. At the end of the book are several pages of additional books available from the publisher, described as Valentine’s Catalogue of Rudimentary and Advanced Educational Books.
