Description

Hasidic commentary on Genesis by R. Shneur Zalman of Liady (1745–1813), the founder of Habad Hasidism. He was according to family traditions born in Liozna, Belorussia, on the 18th of Elul. After his marriage in 1760 he devoted himself to Torah study. Concluding that he knew "a little about learning, but nothing about prayer" in 1764 he decided to learn about Hasidism from R. Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezhirech, leader of the Hasidic movement. In Mezhirech he became one of the inner circle of the Maggid's pupils. Although he was one of the youngest pupils, the Maggid had a high opinion of him, and in 1770 delegated to him the task of composing a new and up-to-date Shulhan Arukh. R. Shneur Zalman worked on this book for many years, but published only small parts of it. About one-third was printed posthumously (the rest had been destroyed by fire) and is known as the "Shulhan Arukh of the Rav" (1814). Though not a hasidic work, it represents - as the Maggid had intended - a great halakhic achievement. It evidences R. Shneur Zalman's superb Hebrew style, his ability to provide lucid explanation, and profundity without complexity. It became an authoritative halakhic source among observant Jews.

. ובו דרושים ובאורים טובים אשר נמצאו בין כתבי קודש שנשארו מהמנוח הרב מוהר"ר שניאור זלמן נ"ע... והמה מיוסדים על פרשיות... מפרשת בראשית עד פ' תולדות [ולא עד בכלל] ומפני שהקונטרסים הללו המה בכתובים בלשון קצרה מאוד הרחיבם בתוס[פת] ביאור בנו הרב מוה' דוב בער שי'... במצות והוצאות והתאמצות השגת הכתבים הנ"ל ע"י... מוה' טודרוס במהו' יהודא יפה.

ספירת-דפים משובשת. ראינו טופס שני, שנדפס על נייר כחול, ובו הוחלף דף השער: ספר תורת חיים. בו דרושים וביאורים וגם תוכחת מוסר... בדפוס... יעקב במו' שמואל סג"ל... נדפס בסדילקאב בשנת תקפ"ו לפ"ק. שם מוציא לאור לא נזכר בשער זה. מגוף הספר הושמטו תיבות ואף קטעים שלמים מפני הצנזורה. ספירת דפיו גם היא משובשת, ובו: [1], ח, מח, [1-סומן: נא], נ-פז, [1], [2-סומנו: פז;צ ], צג-צה, עט דף (צוינו רק השינויים בינו ובין הטופס הראשון). בדף צה, ב נוסף קישוט זהה לקישוט המודפס בשער הטופס הראשון. יצחק ריבקינד (בספר היובל לאלכסנדר מארכס, ניו-יורק תש"ג, עמ' -36 34) מספר על טופס שלישי זהה לטופס הראשון, אלא שגם בו נוסף הקישוט בדף צה, ב. עיין שם. בשלשת הטפסים נדפס מעבר לשער אישור הצנזור להדפיס את הספר בסדילקאב. מאמר "והנחש היה ערום", הנדפס בדף ל, ב-לה, א, נדפס כבר לחוד. עיין למעלה:
