Description		    The classic work on ethics and morals. Menorat ha-Ma'or,(“Candlestick of Light”), one of the most popular works of religious edification among the Jews in the Middle Ages. Written “for the ignorant and the learned, the foolish and the wise, the young and the old, for men and for women,” the work has enjoyed over 70 editions and printings (1st ed. Constantinople, 1514) and has been translated into Spanish, Ladino, Yiddish, and German. The book became a handbook for preachers and served for public reading in synagogues when no preacher was available.

בפרט השנה יש לחשב שם ה' במלואו. דף א,ב מספר ר' משה חנוך הלוי, המביא לבית הדפוס: "אנכי בדרך נחני ה' פה העיר המהוללה ליוורנו יע"א כי יצאתי ממקומי עיר עדן יע"א עזבתי את בני ביתי ונטשתי את חצרותי פניתי מכל עסקי לצא' דרך אניה לעבור ארחות ימים להתעסק בדבר מצוה להוציא לאור ספרי הקדש זה ספר מנורת המאור וספר חיי אברהם ולסייע באוני ואוני למען דפו'ס ס' הנורא הזוהר הקדוש חדש מעתה מבונ' מכל טוב וכל הפירושים שהיו בדפוסים הראשונים ובפי' הנחמד ס' מקדש מלך ומפתחות הזהר לא נראה כמהו עד היום לזכות את הרבים ב"י אנשי תימן כלם קדושים אשר נפשם חשקה בתורה ... מהודא ומשבח אנא לאלה אבהתי אשר גבר עלי חסדו והגיעני למחוז חפצי במחה"ק הזה עיר גדולה של הכמים ושל סופרים הנאהבים והנעימים יצ"ו ה' אתם ברכות לעד, ומצאתי את שאהבה נפשי כרע כאח לי מכירו כייתי לשעבר ועכשיו ביותר זה דודי וזה רעי מדפיס תמימים כה"ר משה ישועה טובייאנא הי"ו כי מיום בואי יצא לקראתי בסבר פנים יפות". ר' משה חנוך הלוי, סוחר עשיר בעדן, נתפרסם בייחוד בזמן משיח השקר שכר כחיל בתימן. עיין בקובץ שבות תימן, תל-אביב תש"ה, עמ' 148-124. ועי' מה שכתב על מהד' זו בעל מהד' נא אמון תרל"ח.
