Description		    Only edition of this work explaining prayers and the sources of customs by R. Hayyim Isaac ben Jacob Eliezer Gandman of Karlin. The title page has a sub-heading that it is of small size and of great value. Its text continues that it “overflows all its banks” (Joshua 3:15) on the Torah, prayer, words of Musar and wisdom, good customs and straight ways, good middot for the poor and for the wealthy, verses from Tanakh,with an explanation that is correct and to the point, and additional good subjects. One who looks into them will be upright and beloved. There is a second like title page and, on the verso of the second title page bakashot, and other matter. Pithei Hayyim has approbations from R. Hayyim ha-Levi Solovetchik, R. Solomon Zalman Sender Kahana-Shapira, R. Zevi Hirsch ha-Kohen Volk, R. Jacob Isaac Reines, R. Israel Jacob Yabez, R. Shabbatei Reuben, and R. Reuben Yonah. There is an introduction from the author and then the text, which is in two columns in rabbinic letters. Pithei Hayyim is divided into four she’arim, ech with many simanim, and after is sha’ar ha-Derash, novellae on Humash and books of the Bible, concluding with errata.
