R. Saul Lowenstam (1717-1790) was born in Rzeszow, the son of the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Lowenstam. He was Chief Rabbi of Dubno, Poland and succeeded his father in Amsterdam. His work, Binyan Ariel (this lot), made him renowned throughout the Jewish world. He was widely known as the Binyan Ariel or as Rabbi Saul Amsterdammer.
R. Abraham b. Benjamin Poppers Katz, younger brother of the author and rabbi of Tiplitz, his approbation to the work appears on title verso.
