The Tanya's title gives date as 1832, Mundschein fixes the date as 1852. The latter work has a date of 1831 but is assumed to have been printed c. 1850. Perhaps they were both printed simultaneously in 1852.

Description

R. Shneur Zalman of Liady (1745–1813), the founder of Habad Hasidism. He was according to family traditions born in Liozna, Belorussia, on the 18th of Elul. After his marriage in 1760 he devoted himself to Torah study. Concluding that he knew "a little about learning, but nothing about prayer" in 1764 he decided to learn about Hasidism from R. Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezhirech, leader of the Hasidic movement. In Mezhirech he became one of the inner circle of the Maggid's pupils. Although he was one of the youngest pupils, the Maggid had a high opinion of him, and in 1770 delegated to him the task of composing a new and up-to-date Shulhan Arukh. R. Shneur Zalman worked on this book for many years, but published only small parts of it. About one-third was printed posthumously (the rest had been destroyed by fire) and is known as the "Shulhan Arukh of the Rav" (1814). Though not a chasidic work, it represents - as the Maggid had intended - a great halakhic achievement. It evidences R. Shneur Zalman's superb Hebrew style, his ability to provide lucid explanation, and profundity without complexity. It became an authoritative halakhic source among observant Jews.

Kuntres ha-Hitpa'alut, on contemplation and on ecstasy by R. Dov Baer Schneerson, the Author, expounds and develops his father's Kabbalistic teachings. R. Dov Baer Schneerson (1773-1827), was the only son of the Ba'al ha-Tanya, and his successor. He placed great emphasis on the element of meditation and strengthened the intellectual aspect of Habad, designating the study of Hasidism not only as a means to an end but also an end in itself. The majority of his works are his transcription or interpretation of his father's teachings.

בפרט יש לחשב את שם הוי"ה במלואו. על-פי שקלאוו תקע"ד, בהשמטת ההסכמה ושם המחבר. שערי חב"ד 53; ספר התניא, ביבליוגרפיה, עמ' 73, יב. יש טפסים בהם נדפס הקונטרס הראשון של הספר מחדש, ופרט השנה עולה: תרי"ב. נראה שהספר אכן נדפס בשנה זו ולא בשנת תקצ"ב.

קונטרס ההתפעלות(שיהי' התפעלות נפשם רק התפעלות אלקות דווקא[!] ולא התפעלות חיי בשר). מרב האי גאון בוצינא קדישא... מו"ה דוב בער (זללה"ה) בן... מו"ה שניאור זלמן (המוצא [!] לאור שמואל מבית לוי)...
