Detailed
Description
Collection of hilkhot shehitah (laws of kosher slaughter) in Hebrew and Judeo-Persian tafsir prose with points. The work gives extensive coverage to the animal parts (diagram of hind leg!) and their required appearance to be certified kosher. A sample certificate for rabbis who have merited semiha (anointment i.e. graduation) is likewise included. The Persian community dates back to Biblical times and has for centuries followed their traditional ways of religious life, not being influenced by external trends and currents. Lacking the printing press these sheltered communities employed scribes to write their religious prayer and study books. Some customs in the prayer rites go back to the prayer book of R. Saadiah Ga'on. From the 16th century on the Kabbalah and especially later its Lurianic school and system found its way to Persia and influenced Jewish literary production in the areas of commentaries to the Bible, prayers, and liturgic poetry. All of this rich history is reflected in this work.
