Detailed Description |
|
Bi-lingual Hebrew-Judeo-German eulogy at the placement of the metzevah (headstone) for Zerel Rahel, daughter of R. Michael Shimon May, wife of R. Mordecai ben Aryeh Loewenstamm. R. Mei’s name is in large letters and below in a smaller font it informs that Zerel Rahel was the wife of R. Loewenstein. The form and text of the metzevah is reproduced. The eulogy is a learned discourse in two columns, the inner column Hebrew in square unvocalized letters, the outer column in Judeo-German, also ion square letters. The text begins with the verse “And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day” (Genesis 35:20). It continues that the stone that we have put today for a remembrance on the grave can be understood in Hebrew in three ways: Metzevah, Ziyyon, and Nefesh. Metzevah is from the verse “And Jacob set a pillar. . . .” which comes from metzv, to stand and metzav, to place, for one places it for a continuous remembrance; Ziyyon is from the verse “then he shall set up a sign (ziyyon) by it” (Ezekiel 39:15) because it marks the place. R. Loewenstamm explains Nefesh and continues in this vein, so that Mazkeret is a learned and moving eulogy for his wife. |
