Only edition of this concise world history by Salomen Zalman Sobel. There is a half-title page and then facing German and Hebrew title pages. Their text states that Doroth Olomim relates events from early times, from the time that God created man on the earth until the present generation. With all the events (news) that were revealed to sages in all fields of knowledge. It relates that Sobel was born in Levov and was a teacher of Hebrew, German, and French. Prior to that he taught in a normal school in Czernowitz under the direction of Dr. Engel, district head of Bukovina. There are approbations from R. Dov Berish Meisels and R. Hayyim Eliezer Vokes; verse in which the initial letters from an acrostic of Zalman Sobel, and an introduction from the author. The text is divided into sixty ma’amarim, from the creation to 1830. Friedberg writes that there was a second part which he saw but it remained in manuscript and was not printed.
Doroth Olomim is in fact an abridged translation of Umständlichere erzählung der merkwürdigen begebenheiten aus der allgemeinen weltgeschichte by Gottfried Gabriel Bredow (December 14, 1773-September 5, 1814) a German historian, who became successively professor at the universities of Helmstedt, Frankfurt an der Oder and Breslau.Bredow's principal works are Planbuch der alten Geschichte, Geographie und Chronologie (Eutin, 1799; English trans., London, 1827); Chronik des 17. Jahrhunderts (Altona, 1801); Entwurf der Weltkunde der Alten (Altona, 1816); Weltgeschichte in Tabellen (Altona, 1801; English trans. by J. Bell, London, 1820). |
