Paragraph 2    R. Joseph b. Raphael Joshua Zion Serero (1843–1902), was a pietist, kabbalist, and dayyan in Fez. Serero was a descendent of Spanish Talmudical scholars who settled in Fez after the Expulsion. When the Arabs conducted a pogrom in the mellah of Fez in 1912, they burned a number of houses, including his synagogue and its famous library that was totally destroyed, together with his writings and legal decisions. The library contained many of the volumes the Serero family had brought with them upon the Expulsion from Spain.
