Detailed Description |
|
Two pendrawings showing one of the sea battles fought by the combined Spanish-Dutch fleet in 1676 against the French fleet. In 1674 the population of the island of Sicily revolted against Spanish rulers and called in the French for their support. In 1676 the Spanish assisted by a Dutch fleet under the famous Dutch admiral Michiel Adr. de Ruyter were attacking the French in a number of battles. During the battle fought at Messina, to which the drawings refer, the Dutch admiral was killed. |
