Description		    This volume was translated and arranged by Arturo Carlos de Barros Basto. Barros Basto (1887-1961) was the “leader of Marrano revival in Portugal . . . Born at Amarante near Oporto [Porto], of a New Chrisitian family, he was introduced to the secret practices of the Marranos by his grandfather, entered a military career and in the revolution in 1910 hoised the Republican flag on the town hall of Oporto. On returning from World War I, he studied Hebrew, entered Judaism officially, and threw himself into the work of Marrano regeneration.” He solictied foreign support for a large synagogue to be built, published handbooks of Jewish practice and edited a journal (ha-Lappid) and founded a “seminary” (Yeshibah Rosh-Pinah Instituto Teologico Israelita). He devoted much of his free time to serving as a missionary to other Marrano communities in Portugal.
