Detailed
Description
Quadruplex (four language) Psalter. Psalms in Hebrew, Greek, Ethiopic, and Latin. The title page states that the languages are Hebrew, Greek, Chaldean, and Latin. This is incorrect for Chaldea refers to Aramaic and the fourth language here is Ethiopic. A previous owner realized the error, for he lined out Chaldea and wrote in Aethopica. A double-spread opening of the Psalter reads from left to right: Latin, Ethiopic, Greek, and Hebrew.

The editor, Johann Potkin, began to learn Ethiopic in 1511 in Rome from Abyssinian monks, and in 1513 published an Ethiopic Psalter, the first book printed in Ethiopic characters, in Rome with the same type. This is the first printing of the Ethiopic text in a polyglot. The intricate bold wood arabesque border on the title page appeared earlier on the five language polyglot Psalter printed in Genoa in 1516.

Paragraph 2    המקור העברי (מנוקד ומוטעם) והתרגום היווני עמודה מול עמודה. בעמוד המקביל תרגום אתיופי (געז) ותרגום לאטיני, עמודה מול עמודה.
