Description		    Important polemic work by the students of R. Menahem ben Jacob ibn Saruq and R. Dunash ben Labrat, two of the greatest Hebrew grammarians. R. Menahem b. Jacob ibn Saruq (Saruk; tenth century), was the author of Mahberet, covering the entire Hebrew Bible. It is the first complete Hebrew dictionary in which the root system is worked out, separating them from the prefixes and suffixes. The Mahberet, written in a pure Hebrew, includes definitions and explanations. R. Dunash b. Labrat (mid-10th century), the other great Hebrew grammarian and ibn Saruq' s rival, claimed to have disputed 200 items in the Mahberet, but in the text which has been preserved there are only 160 entries. Many of Dunash's comments dealt with Menachem's explanations which, in his opinion, were likely to lead to error in matters of Halacha and belief. This religious factor may explain the severity of his attack. The book begins with correspondence from R. Solomon Leib Kohen Rappoport and R. Samuel David Luzzato (Shadal), followed by detailed introduction which includes a biography of ibn Saruq, Dunash, and R. Isaac ibn Gikatilla and R. Judah ben Sheshet. There is a poetical introduction and then a defense of ibn Saruq by his students, also including R. Isaac ibn Kapron. There are annotations from the editor, S. G. Stem. The second part of the book contains a rebuttal of the defense of ibn Saruq's students by R. Judah b. Sheshet, a student of R. Dunash. The volume concludes with a מבוא לקורות לשון עברי.

Ibn Saruq was born in Tortosa, Spain but moved at an early age to Cordova, where first Isaac, the father of Hisdai ibn Shaprut, and afterwards Hisdai were his patrons. Ibn Saruq was the author of Hisdai's famous letter to the king of the Khazars. R. Dunash b. Labrat (mid-10th century), linguist and Hebrew poet, was described by R. Moses ibn Ezra as a Baghdadi by origin and a man of Fez by education. R. Dunash studied with Saadiah Gaon in Baghdad, and was called by the honorific titles nasi and gevir, and served as a rabbi and dayyan. Dunash wrote a series of responsa against Menachem and presented them, with praise and thanks, to Hisdai.

LXXVI עמ': הקדמה; מבוא. במבוא נכללו גם תולדות ר` חסדאי אבן שפרוט, ר` מנחם אבן סרוק ותלמידיו דונש ותלמידו, ובראשן (עמ` XXXVIII-XXIII): "אגרת כתב אותה מנחם בן סרוק מן הסהר אל ... חסדאי בן אסחק ... ומבקש ממנו שיראה בעינו[יו] ויתר מאסרו". נדפסה לראשונה ע"י שד"ל בתוך בית האוצר, לשכה א, לעמבערג תר"ז, "ואנכי נותן אותה היום לפני הקורא כפי סדורו עם כל הגהותיו, תקוניו ובאוריו ואת אשר הוספתי עליו". 104 עמ': תשובות תלמידי מנחם ן' סרוק. כוללות 55 השגות. שטרן הוסיף הערות והעתיק קטעים מתוך תשובות דונש ומחברת מנחם, המרומזים בדברי התלמידים. בההערות הובאו גם הערותיו של שמחה פינסקר (עמ' 28-21), מתוך ספרו לקוטי קדמוניות, וויען תר"ך, וכן "דברי החכם שד"ל" (עמ' 29-28) שנדפסו שם. עמ' 30-29: הערות מאת אברהם גייגר. 44 עמ': תשובות יהודי אבן ששת. 0 עמ': מבוא לקורות לשון עברי.
