The author, R. Joseph ben Azriel ha-Levi Schnitzler came to London from Amsterdam. He informs in the introduction that he has been blind for the last twenty eight years. Therefore, R. Schnitzler dictated his commentary to R. Zarah ha-Levi, the reader of the Hamburg congregation in London.
The printer J. Wertheimer, founded his Hebrew press in 1820. It remained active for over a century, subsequently under the name of Williams (Wertheimer), Lea, and Company. For a long period this firm published most books in London requiring Hebrew type, apart from the Bible and the books of the missionary societies
