Detailed
Description
   R. Abraham b. Moses de Boton (1545?–1588), Salonika-born rabbi and halakhist. R. Boton was related to R. Moses di Trani and studied under R. Samuel de Medina together with R. Mordecai Kalai. He taught in Salonika and in Apulia. In his youth he began to write a commentary, Lehem Mishneh, to Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. In 1575 he obtained a copy of R. Joseph Caro's Kesef Mishneh on Mishneh Torah and from then on he included in his own work only those novellae and comments that had not already appeared in Caro's work. R. Boton's work, one of the most important commentaries on Mishneh Torah, was first published in two volumes (Venice, 1609); it has since been republished with nearly every edition. Lehem Rav (Smyrna, 1660) is a compendium of his responsa. A few of Boton's novellae on tractate Bava Kamma were published in R. Abraham ibn Akra's Me-Hararei Nemerim (Venice, 1599). Boton's clarity of expression and his lucid style are particularly evident in his responsa. Some of his responsa are signed "Hiyya Abraham b. Moses," the first name having been added after his recovery from a severe illness. Among his pupils were R. Samuel Hayon and R. Shabbetai Jonah. R. Boton died during a plague in Salonika.
