Detailed
Description
More than 231 bekashot (supplications), piyutim and pizmonim (liturgical poetry), Many for special occasions, such as Shabbat Kodesh, Rosh Ha-Shanah, and Simhat Tora. Most of Seder Shevahot is taken from the Sefer Pizmonim (Calcutta, 1856) arranged by R. Eliezer ben [Meir] Aaron Saadiah ha-Kohen Arakie, with additions and omissions. Among the additons are pizmonim for the Sassoon family. R. Arakie’s name does not appear on the title page, which informs that it was brought to press by R. Moses Judah Kohen Shamash. The first thirteen pages have an index of the bekashot. There are additional bekashot besides the 231 that are numbered. At the end of the book it is noted in English that it was printed in Bombay at the Anglo-Jewish and Vernacular Press, opposite Musjid Bunder Railway station.

R. Eliezer ben [Meir] Aaron Saadiah ha-Kohen Arakie (1800-64), a native of Cochin, established the first Hebrew printing press in India in Calcutta in 1840–41. Until then the published writings of the Cochin Jews were printed in Amsterdam. Between 1841 and 1856 he produced about 28 Hebrew books of a halakhic, liturgical, and literary nature. Not only did R. Arakie operate the press but he selected the books to be printed, edited a number of them, and translated some works, for example, the haggadah from the Persion language, into Hebrew, and corrected the text of others.
