Detailed
Description
The first work is Ir Shushan, homilies and response by R. Eliezer Lipman ha-Levi Stein (c. 1778–1851), a Hungarian talmudist and preacher. He was a correspondent on halakhah with R. Moses Sofer (Hatam Sofer), R. Meir Eisenstadt, and his teacher R. Judah Aszo. He served as av bet din of the community of Gy[ngy[s, and afterwards as rabbi and av bet din in Nagysz[ll[s (Vinogradov). At the age of 60, R. Stein decided to emigrate to Erez Israel, obtaining a letter of recommendation from Hatam Sofer to the philanthropists of Hungary. In the letter, Hatam Sofer describes Stein’s greatness as a Talmudist. During Stein's visits from town to town he went to Dunaszerdahely and was appointed to the then vacant office of rabbi and av bet din. Abandoning his previous plan, he remained there until his death. Among R. Stein’s other works are Hishanot ha-Bimah (1943), against placing the bimah in the synagogue in front of the ark, and Evel Moshe (1840), a eulogy on Moses Sofer.

The second work, Har Tabor, are the responsa of R. Israel David ben Mordecai Margolies Schlesinger Jaffe called David Sered (c. 1802-64), directed against innovation in synagogue practice introduced by the Reform movement in Hungary. Among the change criticized is the moving the bimah from the center of the synagogue to the front of the ark. At the end of the volume is a supplement in German Der Berg Tabor directed against Dr. W. A. Meisel, chief rabbi of Budapest. This supplement has its own title page. Har Tabor is appropriately named, as it recalls the biblical site where Barak routed the forces of Sisera (Judges 4:12-16). The volume is dated “Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel is by the sea, so shall he come” (Jeremiah 46:18).

R. Jaffe, a descendant of R. Mordecai Jaffe (Levush) and a student of the Hatam Sofer, was rabbi in Senice-Szenc in Slovakia, and after 1832, rabbi and av bet din of the Bazin-Pezinok community in the Bratislava (Pressburg) district. He was a leader in the fight against reform and is the author of responsa.
