Detailed
Description
A rare manuscript by a 17th century rabbinical scholar and physician. R. Samuel b. Elisha Portaleone (Shaar Arye) (17th cent.), was a member of a prominent family which originated in the Portaleone quarter of Rome. From the last half of the 14th century the family produced rabbis, physicians, authors, and poets. His uncle was the author of Shiltei Ha'Geborim (Mantua 1612), a scholarly detailed work on the operation of the Temple. R. Samuel succeeded his uncle to the rabbinate of Mantua. The few of his writings that survived appear in the works of other authors. His eulogy for R. Hananiah b. Solomon Finzi delivered in 1630, is recorded in Emek Halacha (p. 106 - ms. JUNL). His voice was likewise heard when he proposed banning games of chance in the Mantua ghetto (Simonsohn, Mantua p. 535). The Hida, who saw many, many books and manuscripts, writes (Shem Ha'Gedolim) that he never saw the Rabbi's handwriting, although he has heard that a commentary on the Shulhan Arukh survives in manuscript.
