Broadsheet issued by the rabbis of the Beit Din Zedek in Jerusalem for our precious brothers for whom it is a time, “‘of trouble and distress,” (Zephaniah 1:15) tumult and consternation.” This is a time when “an enemy oppresses Israel” (Numbers 10:9). The broadsheet notes the terrible cruelty with which the wicked of the nations persecute us. It mentions Hitler éî"ù by name, this snake, viper, who wishes to deny the people of G-d from under the heavens and has started a war and fallen on Poland with great violence. It notes the obligation to pray for those nations, such as Great Britain, under whose wing we seek refuge and for our brothers in those lands, who stand between misfortune and captivity, between the sea and dry land, that He should have mercy on them and bring redemption.
The broadsheet is signed by R. Zevi Pesah Frank, (1873–1960), Rav and Av Beit Din, R. Joseph Gershon Horowitz, and R. Elijah ben S. Re’im. The final line of the broadsheet warns merchants against charging exorbitant prices, noting that it violates not only the law of the land but also a strict Torah prohibition.
