Description		    Series of letters in support of the Enlightenment by Naphtali Herz Wessely (1725–1805). The first letter, with eight chapters, was written in response to the edict of Tolerance by Emperor Joseph II of Austria. It advocates modernizing Jewish education and the study of secular subjects by Jews. This letter provoked considerable protest from traditional elements in the Jewish community, among them R. Ezekiel Landau (Noda bi-Yehudah, 1713–1793). The second letter, sent to the heads of the community of Trieste, who consulted Wessely about a school program, is his response to that criticism. Here he attempts to mollify his opponents by stating that he did not mean to minimize the importance of Torah study. The third letter, called Ein Mishpat, is support for Wessly from Polish and German colleages. The fourth and final letter, comprised of twenty chapters and an index, is a more extensive reply to his critics.

Naphtali Herz Wessely was an important member of the German Haskalah. He was an associate of Moses Mendelssohn and contributed a commentary on Leviticus (Berlin, 1782) to the Biur. He was a prolific writer. Among Wessely’s most important works Shirei Tiferet (1789–1802), an epic poem on the Exodus from Egypt It is one of the major literary work of the German Haskalah.
