Description
   Addressed to the Agudat ha-Rabonim in New York, the Chief Rabbi of the Budapest Court certifies that the Slivovitz (plum brandy) of a certain manufacturer is approved for use on Passover. The certificate is cosigned by R. Jonathan Steiff and sealed with the Court's seal.

R. Mordecai Ephraim Fishel b. Benjamin Zev Sofer Sussman (1867-1942) was a prominent rabbinical scholar, served in prestigious communities. He assumed his father-in-law's position, R. Kopel Reich, as Chief Rabbi of Budapest. His commentary on the Pentateuch, Ateret Paz was published by his descendents in Jerusalem (1967).

R. Jonathan b. Zvi Steiff (1877-1958), was a prominent rabbinical scholar, served in prestigious communities. A student of the Ktav Sofer, he was appointed to the Budapest Rabbinical court in 1923. After the Holocaust he settled in the United States where his views and responsa were widely accepted. Several of his works were published in Europe during his lifetime, several books of collected responsa and novella were printed in Brooklyn after his demise.
