Description		    Important ethical work by an anonyomous Kabbalist. Tohorot ha-Kodesh has approbations from R. Jacob ben Benjamin Katz, R. Aryeh Leib, R, Isaac Zelig ben Aryeh Judah Leib of Kalish, and R. Isaac ben David of Yanov. They are followed by the introduction of the author, who calls refers to this work as Hanhagot Yesharot, as it deals with proper behavior, whether for the day or night, which encompasses Torah study; synagogue and prayer; business ethics; Shabbat or festival days. Social criticism holds a central place in this work. Ethical literature’s preoccupation with just social behavior as the supreme religious goal is clearly presented, especially in the criticism of contemporary rabbis. In fact, the author emphasizes that right social behavior takes precedence over study of the Torah.

It was originally thought that R. Benjamin Wolf ben Mattathias was the author, as his name is mentioned on the title page. R. Wolf, however, was the person who brough the book to press and arranged the financing for its publication. The author, according to his introduction, chose to remain anonymous in order to avoid pride of authorship, and probably also because of the harsh criticism of contemporary rabbis, institutions, and customs contained in Tohorot ha-Kodesh. Evidence in the book shows that the author was from Poland, and in the work he occasionally compares the customs of Eastern Europe with those of the Orient. It seems that the author was poor, wandered from place to place, and knew Russian.
